The Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship
The research aspect of the Project was undertaken by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, which is based at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford.
Skoll brought to the Partnership, an association with an institution rich in history and legacy, which helped to underline the significance of the Cultural Shift Programme.
The team, comprised of Dr Alex Nicholls, Tim Curtis and Indianna Minto, tracked the entire experience of creating social enterprises over the lifetime of the Project. By focusing on the incubation process, the group collected and collated information to help address some key issues which will inform activities in relation to the formation and success of the social enterprise concept.
Two of the key questions which the team addressed were:
1. How can social enterprises assist the state of delivery of goods and services and particularly, in the creation of employment opportunities for the socially and physically disadvantaged?
2. What barriers exist to the formation of successful social enterprises?
They produced a set of protocols or guidelines for interaction between the public sector and social enterprises. The results from the study will go a fair way in informing activities within the sector for the South East of England. Beyond this, is the wider impact the study will have given collaboration with partners from Italy and Poland.
Such comparative work will be useful in providing needed tools of analyses while allowing for the build up of resources on ‘best practices’ for the social enterprise sector.
